Dental Equipment Service — Level 2: Fault-Finding
Units, handpieces, compressors and suction, dental X-ray and CBCT, autoclaves
Part of the program: Dental Equipment Service Engineer — program (8 h) →
Level 1 taught you to see the whole dental installation and keep it safe and maintained. Level 2 starts when something stops anyway. This course teaches the engineer to read the code and the symptom, place the fault on a map of air, water, suction, power and control, prove it with a gauge, a meter or a swap, and follow it through the unit, the handpieces, the compressor and suction plant, the intraoral, panoramic and CBCT X-ray units and the autoclave to the part that has actually failed - and then return the equipment to service with the tests and records that show it is fit for patients.
The chair board was replaced. The capacitor on the old one was the fault.
- Boards, drives and handpieces are replaced because they are easy to change, while the real cause - a tired start capacitor, a wrongly set pressure, a membrane, a cable cracked inside a moving joint - is left in place and the fault comes back.
- After a board replacement or a new installation the chair jerks, stops or shows a warning, and hours are lost swapping motors before anyone runs the learning procedure the manufacturer describes.
- Dental X-ray units, sensors and autoclaves go back into use after a repair without the tests that prove radiation output, image quality or sterilisation, and nobody has written down who decided the equipment was fit for use.
After the course you can
Curriculum
Turn a dental complaint or error code into a short list of suspects on the subsystem map, choose the cheapest test that separates them, and know which changes are yours to make and which are not.free
22 min02Dental units: air and water circuits, valves, instrument blocks, foot controls and control boards
Fault-find a dental unit's air, water and control circuits with a gauge and a meter: locate a wrong pressure, a leaking membrane or valve, a foot control or holder fault, a chair drive or limit-switch fault and a board fault without replacing parts at random.24 min03Handpieces and motors: turbines, micromotors, bearings, lubrication; repair or replace
Decide on the bench whether a weak, noisy or hot instrument is the handpiece, the attachment, the motor, the hose or the unit; choose between repair, cartridge exchange and replacement; and prove the repair before the instrument goes back to a patient.22 min04Compressors, suction and water quality: oil-free compressors, dryers, suction motors, separators and waterline disinfection
Find the cause of low or wet air, nuisance tripping and noise on a dental compressor, of weak, cycling or non-stopping suction, and of water-quality faults, by measuring at the plant and at the chair and by testing the electrical start circuit.24 min05Intraoral X-ray and sensors: generators, timers, tube heads, sensors and PSP plates
Separate mains, control, cable, tube-head, sensor, plate-scanner and software faults on intraoral X-ray systems using codes, the exposure stage and the image, without making test exposures you do not need and within your radiation authorisation.24 min06Panoramic and CBCT: mechanics, detectors, calibration, software and network
Separate motion, sensor, high-voltage, detector, calibration, positioning, software and network faults on panoramic, cephalometric and CBCT units, using the scan sequence, test runs without radiation and phantoms, and know which repairs require acceptance or constancy tests before clinical use.24 min07Dental autoclaves and small devices: class B cycles and their faults; curing lights, apex locators and scalers
Fault-find a benchtop class B steam steriliser from its cycle record, alarms and daily tests - water, vacuum, door seal, steam generator and heaters - and diagnose curing lights, apex locators and ultrasonic scalers to the replaceable part, returning each to use only after the right test.24 min08Complex cases and return to service: intermittent and multi-cause faults, tests, records and who decides fitness for use
Work through intermittent and multi-cause faults across a dental installation, including supply quality and earthing, and return repaired equipment to service with function, safety, electrical, radiation and sterilisation tests, a clear record and a written opinion for the person who decides fitness for use.24 min—Exam

The certificate
Pass the exam and get a certificate of course completion with your name, hours and score. Every certificate has a unique number and a public verification page, so an employer or a customer can check it in one click. It confirms completion of the course; it is not an educational document (diploma) and not a manufacturer authorisation.
Who it is for
Who it is for
- Engineers who have completed Dental Equipment Service — Level 1 or have equivalent experience
- Field engineers in independent service companies and dental dealers
- Hospital biomedical / clinical engineering teams that repair dental equipment in-house
Who teaches
Written by a service engineer working with medical equipment since 2014, including 6.5 years at GE Healthcare and service supervision at Mindray, together with the engineers of Service Engineer.
FAQ
Is this manufacturer training?
No. It is independent, vendor-neutral training. It does not replace the manufacturer's service procedures, does not grant authorisation or access to service software, passwords or licences, and every repair must still be followed by the adjustments, calibrations and checks the manufacturer requires.
Do I need Level 1 first?
Dental Equipment Service — Level 1 is the prerequisite: the installation, chair safety stops, compressor, water, suction and amalgam separator basics, handpiece care and dental X-ray safety are assumed here and not repeated. X-ray Service — Level 1, Steriliser Service — Level 1 and Pneumatics are referred to where they go deeper.
Does it qualify me to repair X-ray equipment?
No. Lessons 5 and 6 teach fault-finding principles. Work on X-ray equipment needs the training, admission and licences set by national radiation-safety rules, and any repair that affects radiation output or geometry needs the tests those rules require before clinical use.
Does it teach board-level repair?
It teaches fault-finding to the replaceable part and the module, with the simple component checks a field engineer makes: fuses, capacitors, relays, cables and connectors. Deeper board repair is covered in the Repair Fundamentals course on electronics.
What does the certificate say?
Your name, the course, the hours, the date and your exam score, with a unique number and a public verification page.
Can my company buy seats for a team?
Yes: five seats and a progress overview for the manager.
