Penlon Prima SP2 and SP3 Anaesthetic Machines — Model Service

Gas supply, the mechanical hypoxic guard, leak and oxygen-failure tests, the PM kits and fault-finding on a mechanical anaesthetic machine

A model course for engineers who have passed Anaesthesia Machine Service — Level 1. The Prima SP2 and SP3 are mechanical machines: gas blocks with their own regulators, a pneumatic gas delivery switch, a gear-linked hypoxic guard, glass flowtubes and a Selectatec-type backbar, with the absorber, ventilator and oxygen monitor as separate units. The course takes that platform apart on paper, runs the high and low pressure leak tests, the oxygen failure and hypoxic guard tests in the right order, follows the six-monthly, annual, two-year and four-year kits, finds faults by section of the gas path and returns the machine to service with the protections proven, not assumed. Independent course: not affiliated with or endorsed by Penlon. Penlon, Prima, Sigma Delta, Safelock and AV-S are trademarks of their owner; Selectatec, Bodok and other names are trademarks of their respective owners.

No screen, no self-test, no error log. On this machine every check is yours.

  • The Prima SP has no automated checkout to hide behind. If the engineer does not run the leak, oxygen failure and hypoxic guard tests by hand, nobody does, and the morning check by theatre staff proves far less than they think.
  • Typical calls end with a vaporizer sent away or a flowmeter block replaced, while the real cause was a perished Selectatec O-ring, a missing Bodok seal, a cracked internal tube or a basal flow that someone tried to close to zero.
  • The hypoxic guard is a pair of gears and two pressure settings. A secondary regulator turned to make a flowtube look right, or a gear refitted one tooth off, removes the patient's protection without any alarm.

After the course you can

01Identify the configuration of a Prima SP2 or SP3 and trace each gas from yoke or pipeline inlet through gas block, cut-off, secondary regulator, needle valve, flowtube, backbar and pressure relief valve to the common gas outlet.
02Run the high pressure, pipeline non-return valve and low pressure leak tests, the oxygen failure and cut-off test, the hypoxic guard concentration test, flush, auxiliary outlet and relief valve checks, and verify the ventilator with an analyser.
03Carry out the 6-month, annual, 2-year and 4-year service with the matching kit, replace hoses and primary regulators on their own intervals, and look after seals, the absorber, the oxygen cell and the ventilator battery.
04Locate leaks, flow and pressure faults, oxygen supply faults, ventilator and electrical faults by isolating one section of the gas path at a time.
05Replace assemblies at procedure level with the machine depressurised, know what is never adjusted on site, and release the machine only after a full function test, electrical safety test and a complete record.

Curriculum

01The Prima SP platform: gas supply, protections, flowmeters, backbar, breathing system, ventilator and options
Identify the configuration of a Prima SP2 or SP3 in front of you and trace every gas from its inlet to the common gas outlet, naming the protection that acts at each point and the separate units the machine depends on.

22 min
02Checks: the pre-use list, high and low pressure leaks, oxygen failure, the hypoxic guard, the ventilator and alarms
Run the Prima SP checks in an order that isolates each section of the gas path, read each result against the manual's acceptance value and know what a pass does and does not prove.
23 min
03Maintenance: the PM schedule and kits, seals and O-rings, absorber, flow sensors, oxygen cell, batteries, cleaning and records
Plan and carry out a Prima SP service visit to the manufacturer's schedule, fit the right kit for the interval, look after the partner units on their own intervals and leave a record that shows what was replaced and what was measured.
22 min
04Troubleshooting: leaks, flow and pressure faults, oxygen supply faults, ventilator faults and electrical faults
Take a complaint about a Prima SP, split it into supply, flow control, fresh gas path, breathing system or partner unit, and find the faulty part with the fewest tests and nothing replaced on guesswork.
23 min
05Repair and return to service: safe preparation, replacement at procedure level, what is never adjusted on site, full tests, electrical safety and the record
Replace Prima SP assemblies safely and within your authority, recognise the settings that are left to manufacturer-trained engineers, and release the machine only after the full function test, the electrical safety test and a complete record.

The certificate

Pass the exam and get a certificate of course completion with your name, hours and score. Every certificate has a unique number and a public verification page, so an employer or a customer can check it in one click. It confirms completion of the course; it is not an educational document (diploma) and not a manufacturer authorisation.

FAQ

Is this Penlon training?

No. It is an independent course, not affiliated with or endorsed by Penlon. Penlon, Prima, Sigma Delta, Safelock and AV-S are trademarks of their owner; Selectatec, Bodok and other names are trademarks of their respective owners. The course does not replace the manufacturer's procedures and does not make you a manufacturer-trained or certified engineer. Work that the manufacturer reserves for trained or certified persons stays with them.

Do I need the service manual?

Yes. You should have the manufacturer's service manual for the Prima SP2/3 range and the user manuals for the absorber, ventilator, vaporizers and oxygen monitor fitted to the machine. The course explains and orders the work; exact procedures, acceptance values and part numbers come from the documentation for your machine's revision and country specification.

Does it cover the AV-S ventilator and the A200SP absorber in depth?

Only as far as they connect to and depend on the Prima SP: power through the gas delivery switch, drive gas from the auxiliary outlet, the bag/vent and interface cabling, and verification on a test lung. Their own service is described in their own manuals and is not repeated here.

Does it cover electronic flowmeter displays and other options?

Options are covered at identification level. Some Prima SP2 and SP3 machines carry an electronic flowmeter display that was the subject of a manufacturer field action; check the machine against the manufacturer's bulletins. Software or option changes, where any exist, are done per the manufacturer's procedure by authorised personnel.

What does the certificate say?

Penlon Prima SP2 and SP3 Anaesthetic Machines — Model Service (Endorsement), with your name, the hours, the date and your exam score, a unique number and a public verification page.

Can my company buy seats for a team?

Yes: five seats and a progress overview for the manager.
