Abbott c4000: error during daily maintenance
What happened
At every daily maintenance run the analyzer raises an error, although all routine checks were redone and everything looked normal, as reported in the case.
What was checked
- Checked all tubing from the wash wells to the waste container — no visible faults.
- Checked the float and its sensor inside the waste container.
- Considered whether the drain line can actually carry the large water volume discharged at morning maintenance.
Cause
The engineers' probable cause: the waste drain line was partially clogged. At morning maintenance the water bath is drained and refilled, a large volume reaches the drain at once, the waste cannot get away fast enough, the level rises and the float switch trips — either because it briefly stuck in its top position or because the switch contacts are worn or oxidised.
The cause is probable and was not fully confirmed.
What was done
Clear the waste drain line so the morning drain volume passes freely, then service the float switch: free it if it sticks, clean oxidised contacts or replace the switch — it sits in the waste drain box behind the right-hand rear panel. Finish by repeating the daily maintenance drain and confirming the float stays down and the error does not return. Since the outcome in this case was probable, treat the problem as solved only after several clean maintenance cycles.
Safety
Analyzer waste is potentially infectious biohazard: wear gloves and eye protection when opening the drain box, and disconnect the analyzer from mains power before removing any rear panel.
Lesson: A recurring daily-maintenance error that survives routine checks often means the drain path cannot keep up with the flow rather than a failed sensor — prove the drain first.
