FOTEK E81M: cut and coag footswitch presses not registered
What happened
The electrosurgical unit stopped recognising footswitch presses for both cut and coag. An E05 indication was reported in the case as a possible observation.
What was checked
- Checked the footswitch, its cable and connectors - no mechanical or visible damage.
- Checked the reed-switch pedal (the reed switches are potted in silicone inside) - the switches themselves worked.
- Traced the pedal signal onto the board, verified it with an oscilloscope and probing around the logic IC to localise the fault to the board side.
Cause
The engineers found a failed 74AC14 logic IC on the board - the pedal signal no longer passed through it. In this case the pedal and cable were healthy, so the fault was in the unit itself.
What was done
Replaced the 74AC14 IC; after the replacement the unit recognised cut and coag footswitch presses again. Case closed as solved.
Safety
Before opening the unit, disconnect it from the mains and allow internal capacitors to discharge, and after any board-level repair run a full electrical safety check - protective earth and patient leakage current - before the unit goes back into clinical use.
Lesson: A footswitch circuit that does nothing is not always a bad pedal - trace the signal all the way onto the board before ordering or replacing the pedal.
