GE Logiq E9: trackball cursor moves only horizontally
What happened
During measurements the trackball cursor moved sideways only; vertical movement was completely absent. No error codes were reported in the case.
What was checked
- Removed the retaining ring and inspected the trackball internals.
- Recorded the cursor behaviour during an active exam to confirm the fault was consistent.
- Checked the rollers, holders and the position reader for wear or obstruction.
- Connected a wired mouse as a cross-check that the cursor itself worked.
Cause
The engineers found dust on the optical sensor of the Y axis under the trackball — the vertical axis was simply not being read.
What was done
Cleaning the trackball and its optics restored both axes. While the assembly was open, the engineers also recommended checking the rollers, holders and the trackball board.
Safety
Disconnect the system from mains power before opening the control panel, and verify electrical safety and both trackball axes before returning the unit to clinical use.
Lesson: A single-axis trackball failure is usually dirt on that axis's optical sensor, so clean the optics before suspecting electronics — and keep the trackball on the periodic maintenance list.
