GE Optima 520: gantry fails to spin up
What happened
After a routine reboot the gantry would not rotate and a rotation error appeared; the fault started suddenly, with no prior issues reported.
What was checked
- The engineers checked the rotation encoder path: they first looked for the encoder on the gantry wheel, then found that on this model the encoder is mounted on the rotation motor itself.
- To confirm the diagnosis, they connected a known-good rotation motor with encoder from a GE Brightspeed and ran it suspended clear of the gantry; the error cleared and rotation was restored.
Cause
A faulty rotation motor with its built-in encoder.
What was done
Replacement of the rotation motor with encoder. As reported in the case, a temporarily fitted motor from a GE Brightspeed restored gantry rotation and the error went away; the final repair is completed with a like-for-like part per the manufacturer's parts and adjustment procedure.
Safety
Isolate the drive and make sure the heavy rotating assembly cannot turn before disconnecting the motor, and after fitting a new rotation motor run the manufacturer's functional and safety checks before returning the scanner to use.
Lesson: On this platform the rotation encoder is built into the drive motor, so a sudden no-rotate fault should point first at the motor/encoder assembly, and fitting a known-good donor in place is a fast way to prove it.
