GE Vivid e9: system does not power on
What happened
The ultrasound system would not power on. As reported in the case, the PSU could be started when forced via its power-on control line, all supply voltages at the BEP unit were present, and the power-button signal (reported as +5 V) reached the motherboard — yet the system stayed off.
What was checked
- Forced the PSU to start via its power-on control line to confirm the PSU itself was serviceable.
- Measured all supply rails at the BEP unit and confirmed they were present as reported.
- Traced the power-on signal from the front-panel button through the I/O board to the motherboard.
- Mapped and beeped out the whole start-up chain, drawing the circuit as they went.
Cause
The engineers found that a failed bridge component on the motherboard was blocking the start-up: the board received a healthy power-on signal but did not respond. This is one case, not a rule for this model.
The cause is probable and was not fully confirmed.
What was done
In this case the system started again after a local reheat of the failed bridge, but that is a temporary result, not a repair. The proper fix is motherboard replacement, expected under warranty from the seller; at the time of the report the final outcome was probable.
Safety
Before opening the chassis and probing the PSU, disconnect the unit from the mains and remember that PSU capacitors can hold a dangerous charge after switch-off; check for shorts before powering the system again.
Lesson: When a system will not start but the PSU and the power-on signal both check out, the fault is likely on the board that must accept the signal — trace the entire start-up chain before ordering parts.
