GE Voluson E8: image artifacts from a failing graphics card
What happened
Image artifacts on the display of a Voluson E8; after a replacement graphics card was fitted, the system also hung after reboot.
What was checked
- Diagnostics pointed to the graphics subsystem; the card was swapped for a first donor unit, and the boot hangs that followed showed this unit was itself faulty rather than the system.
- Driver support for the replacement card was confirmed in advance; chip reflow with a heat gun was raised as an option but treated only as a short-term stopgap, not a repair.
Cause
As reported in the case, the GPU of the original card had degraded and produced the artifacts; the first replacement (an NVIDIA 9800 GT) was dead, which caused the hangs.
What was done
The engineers fitted a near-identical card from the same series (a 9600 GT, as reported in the case); the system detected new hardware, one reboot completed normally, and the drivers already present supported the whole card series, so the unit returned to normal operation.
Safety
Before opening the cabinet, isolate the system from the mains and follow ESD precautions, and complete an electrical safety (leakage current) test before returning the unit to clinical use.
Lesson: Test any donor or substitute board before trusting it, and treat chip reflow as a temporary measure, never a repair.
