Humascope Advanced: dark dot in the centre of the eyepiece field

What happened

A small dark dot appeared in the field of view of the WF 10x/18 eyepiece: perfectly round, about 1 mm as reported in the case, sitting exactly in the centre of the lens. It looked like a factory marking, and it was clearly not dirt or dust on the outer surface.

What was checked

Cause

The engineers found that the eyepieces had been disassembled and reassembled incorrectly at some point. Inside, the lens elements were resting sphere-to-sphere, and where the curved surfaces touched, light refraction produced a visible dark dot exactly in the centre of the field.

What was done

The eyepieces were taken apart and rebuilt with the lens elements in the correct order and orientation. After proper reassembly the field of view was clean again and the dot was gone.

Safety

Before opening any eyepiece or optical housing, disconnect the instrument from the mains and let the illumination lamp cool, and confirm the unit is electrically safe before returning it to use.

Lesson: A perfect dark dot dead centre of the eyepiece field is more often a sign of misassembled internal optics than a factory mark, so always ask whether the optics have been opened before blaming the manufacturer.
