Instrumentation Laboratory ACL TOP 700: Z-axis slippage stops the analyzer
What happened
The analyzer stopped mid-run with error 00056, Z-axis slippage, as reported in the case. Initialization completed normally, but the axis calibration routine aborted with the same error.
What was checked
- Inspect the sampler needle for damage, bending or contamination.
- Check the lubrication of the vertical motion guides.
- Check the flag on the wash-station guide — it can work loose and disturb position sensing.
- Check the metal reference points the needle touches during calibration; in this case the engineers found dirty, rusted screws there.
- If the mechanics look sound, the sampler calibration routine — a procedure from the manufacturer's service documentation, done by authorised personnel.
Cause
The engineers found that the screws the needle touches during axis calibration were dirty and corroded; the contaminated contact surfaces disrupted the calibration, and the system reported it as Z-axis slippage.
What was done
The engineers cleaned the screws; after cleaning the error cleared and normal operation returned. No parts were replaced, and the case was reported as solved.
Safety
Isolate the analyzer from power and let all moving axes stop before putting hands near the sampler mechanics, and treat the needle and wash-station area as biohazardous — wear gloves and decontaminate any touched surfaces.
Lesson: An axis-slippage error is not always worn mechanics — contamination or corrosion on the reference surfaces the needle touches during calibration can mimic mechanical slippage, so check the simple contact points first.
