Medrad Vistron: recurring general system error on the injector

What happened

During normal operation the injector intermittently reported error C599, which the manual classifies as a general system fault rather than a single-component failure.

What was checked

Cause

The engineers found that the same intermittent C599 had two different sources in the reported cases: a failing power supply in one, and a worn multi-turn potentiometer used for position/volume feedback in others.

What was done

The power supply was repaired or replaced — in the reported case either by the authorised service or by the engineers themselves following the service documentation. The potentiometer was replaced with a general-purpose multi-turn equivalent; its shaft differed from the original, so the slot on the shaft had to be re-machined to fit the existing drive. With the faulty component replaced, the error was gone.

Safety

After any power supply or feedback repair, repeat the electrical safety tests from the manufacturer's service documentation (earth and patient leakage currents) and verify dosing accuracy with a test cycle before returning the injector to patient use.

Lesson: A generic intermittent system error can come from the plainest parts — an ageing power supply or a worn feedback potentiometer — so check the simple analog components before condemning the main board.
