Mindray BS-240Pro: unstable reading of reagent barcodes
What happened
The analyzer periodically failed to register on-board reagents: the reagent barcode was read intermittently, and rescanning did not make it stable. Manual entry of the same barcode was accepted without problems.
What was checked
- Inspect and clean the reader window, rule out dirt or film on the optics.
- Make sure no sample tubes are on the disk at the moment of scanning.
- Check reagent expiry dates and the condition of the labels themselves (print quality, smudges).
- Check the position and mounting of the barcode reader.
Cause
Probable cause, as reported in the case: the barcode reader had shifted from its correct position, so the reading geometry was out of alignment. The clean window and the working manual entry pointed to mechanical alignment rather than to the electronics or the reagents.
The cause is probable and was not fully confirmed.
What was done
Restore the position of the barcode reader: remove the left side panel and top cover and realign it at its mounting points. This is a procedure from the manufacturer's service documentation, done by authorised personnel. If adjustment does not restore stable reading, the reader itself is replaced — per the engineers' experience on another instrument, that resolved the same symptom.
Safety
Disconnect the analyzer from the mains and let all moving parts come to a full stop before removing covers, and before returning it to use verify with a check that every reagent is identified correctly — a misread barcode can attach the wrong reagent lot or expiry to patient results.
Lesson: When a barcode reads intermittently while manual entry works fine, check the mechanical alignment of the reader before blaming electronics, labels or reagents.
