ProScan 7000: no COM-port communication with the generator

What happened

The workstation would not talk to the X-ray generator over the COM port. Changing the COM-port number and moving the cable to other connectors on the computer did not help, a port conflict was suspected, and the computer's COM ports had reportedly been failing repeatedly.

What was checked

Cause

In this case the engineers found a failed RS-232 line driver IC (MAX232 type) on the generator side. A shorted driver can put abnormal voltage levels onto the serial line, which fits with the computer's COM ports being damaged as well.

The cause is probable and was not fully confirmed.

What was done

The reported fix was to replace the MAX232 driver IC on the generator's interface board and fit the new IC in a socket, so any future replacement does not need soldering. In this case this was considered the probable fix for the lost communication.

Safety

De-energise the generator and verify that internal capacitors are discharged before touching the interface board, and complete the manufacturer's electrical safety checks before the system is returned to clinical use.

Lesson: When a computer's serial ports keep dying on one machine, suspect the remote line driver on the equipment side before blaming port settings or the PC itself.
