Samsung RS80A: shutdowns on freeze/unfreeze with false temperature spikes
What happened
As reported in the case, the system powered off with two different errors when entering and leaving freeze mode. The logs periodically showed the temperature jumping from 35 °C to absurdly high values within about a second, then immediately returning to 35 °C.
What was checked
- The engineers analysed the temperature logs and saw the telling pattern: instant spikes with an immediate return to normal, not a gradual rise you would expect from real overheating.
- Cooling was checked first as the obvious suspect: the fans were cleaned and the temperature readings were monitored, but the shutdowns kept coming back.
Cause
The engineers found a faulty power supply: the supply line feeding the BF board was disturbing the temperature telemetry. The spikes were false readings, not real heat.
What was done
As reported in the case, finding this took about a year. The power supply was replaced with a new one, and the shutdowns on freeze/unfreeze stopped.
Safety
Work inside a power supply only with the unit isolated from the mains and after the internal capacitors have discharged, and complete the electrical safety test before returning the system to use.
Lesson: Instant, physically impossible sensor jumps in the logs usually point to a failing or noisy power rail, not to real overheating — check the supply feeding the sensor board before chasing the cooling system.
