Siemens Espree: heavy condensate on gradients and overheating Y-axis amplifier
What happened
The engineers found a three-way valve with servo actuator in the cryocompressor cabinet stuck open: the secondary circuit ran too cold, with heavy condensate on the pipework and on the gradient coils. Separately, the Y-axis gradient amplifier overheated intermittently.
What was checked
- Read the actuator nameplate to identify the valve series.
- Checked valve position against secondary-circuit temperatures.
- Flow measurement per gradient and inspection of filters and manifolds were discussed as next steps; the case does not confirm they were done.
Cause
Two independent faults. The overcooling and condensate came from the three-way valve sticking open. The amplifier overheating was not the valve: the engineers found failed cooling fans on two gradient amplifiers.
What was done
The fans were replaced with equivalents selected from the datasheet — airflow and ball-bearing type matched; the original was reported in the case as 4200 rpm and unavailable. Valve replacement was recommended to stop the overcooling and condensate; if amplifiers are replaced, calibration is required. The case is reported as solved on the overheating, with the valve change advised to prevent recurrence.
Safety
Power down and lock out the gradient amplifier cabinet and the cooling plant before working on the loops, treat condensate on or near electronics as a shock and short-circuit hazard, and complete the manufacturer's electrical safety checks before return to use.
Lesson: One complaint can hide two unrelated faults, so check the cooling control loop and the amplifier cooling separately instead of forcing a single cause.
