Sonosite M-Turbo: external power supply incompatibility error with the original PSU

What happened

The system reports an incompatible external power supply even though the original adapter is connected, with the unit powered through the docking station.

What was checked

Cause

In this case the fault was traced to an oxidised, poorly soldered contact in the power connector on the docking station, and a similar joint on the unit's own socket. The intermittent contact was enough for the system to flag the adapter as incompatible.

What was done

Re-soldering the power connector joints on the docking station and on the unit's socket solved the problem in this case. Cleaning the contacts alone sometimes helped, but the soldered joints gave a lasting result.

Safety

Unplug the dock and the unit from mains before opening them and let capacitors discharge, and after soldering on this mains-powered device run a full electrical safety test (protective earth and leakage currents) before returning it to use.

Lesson: Before condemning an adapter over an incompatibility flag, inspect and re-flow the power contacts on the dock and the unit — a corroded joint can mimic a faulty PSU.
