Zeiss IOLMaster 500: measurements abort with an undocumented error

What happened

During routine measurement the unit aborts with an error that is not described in the documentation (shown as error 0). Vendor support could not name a cause or a fix.

What was checked

Cause

Probable, per this single case: a failure or incompatibility of the system software with the SATA SSD drive — the engineers found the fault disappeared once the software ran from the restored factory image on the replaced drive. Their hunch is that this software build misbehaves on SATA SSDs; treat it as one case, not a rule.

What was done

Replaced the system drive, restored the original factory image from the unit's own hard disk onto it, then migrated the current patient database on top. The engineers reported two months of stable operation after that; longer-term behaviour on the new drive remains to be seen.

Safety

Before opening the unit, isolate it from the mains and let it power down completely, and before returning it to clinical use complete the manufacturer's verification checks plus an electrical safety test.

Lesson: When a measurement PC throws an undocumented software error, suspect the storage hardware too — a known-good factory image on a proven drive can bring the device back faster than endless software hunting, as long as the build stays the manufacturer's own.
