Sumitomo MRI Cryocooler Service — Model Service
CSA-71A / CSW-71D compressors and RDK-408 cold heads: helium charge, maintenance, fault-finding and cold head exchange
Part of the program: MRI Service Engineer — full program (16 h) →
A model course for engineers who have passed MRI Service — Level 1. It takes apart the Sumitomo (SHI) cryocooler found on magnets from several MRI manufacturers: the CSA-71A air-cooled and CSW-71D water-cooled compressors, their flex lines and RDK-408 series cold heads. You learn the gas and oil path and the protective devices, the readings that show a drifting system, the adsorber change and a clean helium top-up, the fault-finding order for trips, pressure faults and knocking heads, and how a cold head exchange is prepared, verified on the magnet over the following days and documented. Independent course: not affiliated with or endorsed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries or any MRI manufacturer. Sumitomo, SHI and the model names mentioned are trademarks of their owners.
You know why the magnet needs its cold head. This course is about the machine that keeps it running.
- The cryocooler sits between the building and the magnet and belongs to nobody's habits: the compressor is in a plant room, the cold head is on the magnet, the water is the building's, and faults are found only when the magnet pressure starts to rise.
- Helium is added without asking why it was missing, from an unpurged line or to the wrong target for the head type, and the circuit is contaminated in the name of maintenance.
- Cold heads are replaced while the real cause, a hot compressor, an overdue adsorber or a half-made coupling, stays in place and kills the new head too.
After the course you can
Curriculum
Identify the compressor and cold head in front of you, follow the helium and oil path through a CSA-71A or CSW-71D, name its controls and protective devices, and explain how the health of the cryocooler appears in the magnet's pressure, boil-off and temperature readings.free
22 min02Checks and readings: helium pressure, cooling, sound, hours and the log
Take and record a complete, comparable set of cryocooler readings on a CSA-71A or CSW-71D, and read static and running helium pressure, cooling, cold head sound and running hours as trends that point to a fault before the magnet does.22 min03Preventive maintenance: adsorber, helium charge, couplings, cooling and the cold head interval
Plan and carry out the periodic maintenance of a CSA-71A or CSW-71D at procedure level: adsorber replacement, helium top-up with a purged charging line, coupling and flex line care, air or water side care, and plan cold head service before it fails.24 min04Fault-finding: trips, helium pressure, knocking heads, boil-off and shield alarms
Find the cause of a compressor that will not start or trips, of low or high helium pressure, of a cold head that knocks or stalls, and of rising pressure or shield temperature on the magnet, in a safe order that protects the magnet first and never defeats a protective device.25 min05Repair, cold head exchange and return to service
Prepare a cold head exchange together with the magnet OEM, take part in it safely at procedure level, verify the result over the following days with pressure, heater, temperature and boil-off trends, return exchange parts correctly and document the job.24 min—Exam

The certificate
Pass the exam and get a certificate of course completion with your name, hours and score. Every certificate has a unique number and a public verification page, so an employer or a customer can check it in one click. It confirms completion of the course; it is not an educational document (diploma) and not a manufacturer authorisation.
Who it is for
Who it is for

- Hospital biomedical teams and independent service companies looking after MRI systems with Sumitomo cryocoolers
Who teaches
Written by a service engineer working with medical equipment since 2014, including 6.5 years at GE Healthcare and service supervision at Mindray, together with the engineers of Service Engineer.
FAQ
Is this Sumitomo or MRI manufacturer training?
No. It is an independent course, not affiliated with or endorsed by Sumitomo Heavy Industries or any MRI manufacturer. Sumitomo, SHI and the model names are trademarks of their owners. The course does not replace the manufacturers' procedures and does not grant authorisation, passwords or access to magnet service software.
Do I need the manuals?
You should have the compressor technical instruction, the cold head documentation and the magnet OEM's procedures for the system you work on. The course explains and orders the work; exact procedures, limits and part numbers come from that documentation.
Does the course teach me to change a cold head on my own?
It teaches the preparation, the cryocooler side of the job and the verification afterwards. The swap itself on a magnet is done with, or under the procedure of, the magnet OEM, by people trained for it. The course does not cover magnet ramp, run-down or quench circuits.
Which magnets does it apply to?
Any magnet cooled by a CSA-71A or CSW-71D compressor with an RDK-408 series cold head. Magnet-side values and procedures differ by manufacturer and are taken from that manufacturer's documentation.
What does the certificate say?
Sumitomo MRI Cryocooler Service (Endorsement), with your name, the hours, the date and your exam score, a unique number and a public verification page.
Can my company buy seats for a team?
Yes: five seats and a progress overview for the manager.
