Carestream Dental CS 2100: intermittent internal fault error
What happened
On a dental X-ray unit, error E13 appeared only from time to time. The user documentation gave no real explanation - just that an internal fault had occurred and the unit should be restarted. That on-and-off pattern made the fault easy to dismiss as random.
What was checked
- Disassembled the monoblock and inspected the ceramic anode-current divider and the anode-current measuring path.
- Checked and flexed the wires just above the monoblock connector, where a break can exist but only show up in some positions.
Cause
The engineers found a fractured filament wire just above the monoblock connector - with an error that comes and goes, that break was the suspected cause. As reported in the case, the more typical culprit for this fault is a wire torn off the ceramic plate of the anode-current divider inside the monoblock.
The cause is probable and was not fully confirmed.
What was done
The broken filament wires were restored by soldering. If the break is on the ceramic divider, the divider itself is repaired, after which the monoblock is refilled and evacuated - a procedure from the manufacturer's service documentation. As reported in the case, the work takes about an hour plus the refill and evacuation; the outcome was reported as probable, since the intermittent pattern matched the found break.
Safety
Isolate the unit from the mains before opening the monoblock and treat the high-voltage section as holding a dangerous charge until it is verified discharged; after any monoblock work, complete electrical safety checks and radiation output and leakage testing before the unit returns to use.
Lesson: When an error code appears only intermittently, look for a marginal wire break near connectors and moving parts before blaming the tube or the generator.
