GE LightSpeed VCT (VCT64): SystemState backup cannot be saved

What happened

In this case the engineers could not save the SystemState backup on a GE LightSpeed VCT host: no external SCSI tower was available, the host DVD drive did not work for SystemState, and the USB SystemState tab was missing from the GUI.

What was checked

Cause

No root cause was confirmed in the case; on this host the standard backup paths (SCSI tower, DVD) were unavailable and the GUI did not expose the USB option.

What was done

The SystemState was saved to a USB flash drive with the manufacturer's system-state service utility; this step was a procedure from the manufacturer's service documentation, done by authorised personnel. Discs could still be read with an ordinary reader. For a software reinstall, the engineers reported two workable options: enter the configuration parameters manually or fit a working read-only drive (it reads discs but does not write).

Safety

Power down and isolate the host computer and take anti-static precautions before opening it or swapping drives, and confirm the scanner passes its normal checks before it is returned to use.

Lesson: Know in advance which SystemState backup paths each configuration you service actually offers, before you urgently need one.
