Siemens Syngo: console hangs when a scan is started

What happened

After the external chiller overheated and its breaker tripped, the syngo console froze every time an attempt was made to start scanning.

What was checked

Cause

A dead CMOS battery let the workstation's stored settings (date/time, boot path) reset after the power loss, so the console could not boot cleanly and hung at scan start.

What was done

The engineers replaced the CMOS battery, restored the date/time and re-entered the boot path in the workstation setup; the video card was replaced with an identical model as a precaution, as reported in the case. The problem was solved.

Safety

Unplug the workstation from the mains before opening it to change the battery, and treat a tripped chiller breaker on an MRI as a cooling-system fault that must be diagnosed and cleared before the system is returned to scanning.

Lesson: When a console misbehaves after a power event, check the basics first — a dead CMOS battery can wipe startup settings and mimic a much more serious failure.
